Chapter 3 : Denied by Biev

Fainting Spells : Denied, page 9. Butterflies... everywhere.
Sunday, August 13 @ 6:01 am

Most of the time, we're happier if we don't have to see the underside of things - such as wriggly butterfly legs. That must be why it was so hard to find reference pictures of butterflies in flight and seen from underneath. I really wanted to capture this scene through Aude's eyes, as she is laying in the grass and staring at the sky - which is in fact an ocean, hm? This is where we see if you've been paying attention!

Anyway, as you can see it took me two whole nights to make this picture look somewhat realistic. Butterfly wings are actually pretty boring from that angle - camouflage patterns, mostly. I didn't feel like limiting my color palette to brown, so I made some of the smaller butterflies colorful anyway, though I was pretty faithful to my references for the bigger ones. As such, they aren't as hypnotic as last update's, but don't worry, I have something nice coming : )

Oh! Almost forgot, I made an addition to the sketches section. When I drew thursday's strip, I couldn't find my sketch and I had to improvise a new one. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I got done updating the site, the old sketch turned up. I really regret not using it instead - it has to be a hundred times better.
