Well, here's how the black paper experiment turned out. I rather like it, it suits the mood of this scene. I was afraid you couldn't tell those were upside down waves at the top, but it came out pretty clear. The story will get less weird in a bit... sort of. Or less lonely, at least. Do not despair, there will be some level of interaction in the next panel.
